The Mexican state of Chiapas is located at the bottom of the country both geographically and economically. Nearly one million of the approximately 3.9 million inhabitants in the state speak an indigenous dialect other than Spanish as their primary (or only) language. Among the indigenous, many families live in single room, dirt floor dwellings, built with wood and mud. The gospel has made in-roads in recent years within Chiapas but there are still thousands of souls without Christ. And although it is not dangerous for outsiders to be Christians, many national believers face active persecution and discrimination for their faith.
“55% of Mexico’s hydroelectric energy is produced in Chiapas. However, Chiapas remains the poorest state in Mexico.
Ninety-four of its 111 municipalities live on the poverty line. In [the eastern side of the state], 48% of the adults are illiterate. 80% of the families earn less than $245 USD a month and 70% have no electricity.” --Wikipedia
About the Missionaries
At the end of September 2008, Ron and Ivonne Mouser abandoned all of their earthly possessions that wouldn’t fit in their truck and moved to Arriaga Chiapas, Mexico with their two small children. In Arriaga, they helped administrate an orphanage, shared the pastoral responsibilities of a local church and built a thriving youth ministry. At the end of 2011 they left Arriaga to pioneer a new work among the marginalized people groups living in the poorest part of Chiapas.
The RFC Mission in Chiapas
Relationships for Christ Ministries seek to assist the Mouser family in their goal to minister the love of Jesus Christ to the people of Comitán and the surrounding area through “hands on” community service projects, evangelism and discipleship in the local churches.
RFC seeks to minister 360 degrees: to the people of Mexico, to you as a missionary, and to those you are connected with in your local church body.
Activities and Accommodations
While in Chiapas, Mission Possible teams will be staying at a local hotel in or around Comitán, a colonial city located approximately 40 miles north of the Guatemalan border high in the Sierra Madre mountain range, at an estimated 7,000 feet above sea level. Teams will have the opportunity to evangelize through practical service projects benefiting individual families, community outreaches and/or programs for youth and children.
The level of participation of team members in church services and/or Bible studies will depend upon the gifting of the individual.
One fun day is scheduled for each team. Options include visiting the beautiful shopping mountain village of San Cristobal, river rafting, and/or touring the beautiful waterfalls and lakes surrounding the Comitán.
Do you enjoy working with kids or young people? Do you desire to help the poor and share the Gospel in practical ways? Are you willing to get out of your comfort zone? If that describes you, you’re the kind of person we need on a Mission Possible team to Chiapas!
