We spend so much time worrying about convincing agnostics to believe and trust in God. Many of us study all the apologetics books and keep up with the latest techniques to dialog with, contend with and convince the unbelievers in our lives. We give them the case for this and the case for that, covering all the evidences in our effort to show them that God is real, that he loves and cares about them, and that he desires to be restored in relationship with them. We McDowell them, Stobel them, even C.S. Lewis them...patching a little Scewtape on their lives.
Have we ever stopped to realize that the greatest evidence for God is not found in books and techniques, but rather is found in us?
The greatest evidence that God loves people is when this angry, unloving, fleshly man that I am...loves people. The best case that can be made for a God that extends grace to people is when a hard hearted judgemental person like me...extends grace. The greatest evidence that God forgives is when unforgiving me...forgives. The greatest evidence that God is a blessing is when I bless. Every time I get on a plane and fly to a foreign country to reach people who don't know God or have never had an opportunity to know him, I make the best case for a God that is constantly reaching for the hearts of men and women.
The best parts of our Christian beliefs can't be proven beyond all doubts and that's why they must be taken in faith. Maybe that is why Christ called us to "make disciples". In making disciples "teaching" and "proving" is done by "showing". Follow me as I follow Christ is the order for the day.
Instead of looking for evidence we should be living evidence. The greatest proof of a God is unloveable me...loving, ungrateful me...full of grace, unforgiving me...forgiving, ungiving me...giving, undying me...dying! Perhaps we would do well to remember that some things can't be proven...they have to be shown.
